PA Church Abuse Report Includes Priest Who Served In Las Vegas

One of roughly 300 Pennsylvania priests accused of molesting more than 1,000 children was briefly transferred to a Las Vegas church near the end of his ministry in the 1990s, according to a grand jury report released Tuesday.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Ernest Paone, ordained in 1957, had a history of molestation known to the church and law enforcement officials since at least 1962.

Paone served in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Las Vegas for roughly six weeks in early 1992 before transferring to Los Angeles due to health issues, according to a statement from the Diocese of Las Vegas.

Paone died in 2012.

Despite knowledge of Paone's sexual assaults, Pittsburgh Bishop Donald Wuerl approved Paone's request to be reassigned to Nevada.

Wuerl, now a cardinal, is currently the archbishop of Washington, D.C.
