A push from federal authorities to send a backlog of untested rape kits for DNA analysis has led to more than 1,000 arrests and hundreds of convictions in recent years.
The Department of Justice and the New York City prosecutor’s office have worked in tandem since 2015 to tackle the problem in places across the country, including Las Vegas.
The Manhattan District Attorney said that many who have been identified cannot be prosecuted because of time limits and other factors.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan police department estimated in 2014 to have more than 6,500 untested kits. They anticipate clearing the backlog later this year.
