Dead Body On Roof Of Reno Homeless Shelter For 3 Days

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Sparks city councilman is raising concerns about security at a regional homeless shelter in neighboring Reno after a man died on the roof and his body wasn't discovered until at least three days later.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the death of the homeless Reno man followed two attacks on residents of the Record Street shelter by people who had not been properly checked into the shelter.

Sparks Councilman Ed Lawson doesn't understand why the body went unnoticed for so long. He says there had to be failures in the security measures and surveillance cameras.

The shelter run by Volunteers of America contracts with Reno, Sparks and Washoe County.

Regional group director Pat Cashell (Kuh-SHELL') says they do a good job of ensuring safety but the fact the shelter has outgrown its capacity puts residents at increased risks.
