Utah Lawmakers Will Vote On Changes To Medical Cannabis Law

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are meeting to consider changes to the state's medical marijuana law that has faced fierce criticism from people on both sides of the issue.

The Legislature is expected to vote Monday night on the recommendations, which would scrap plans for an unusual state-run dispensary system and adopt protections for patients who are concerned they could be prosecuted for drug crimes, among other changes.

The revised law became effective in December after a compromise that secured the influential support of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and some marijuana advocates.

The deal drew backlash from other advocates as it placed additional restrictions on growing cannabis and which medical conditions qualify for a prescription.

Utah's medical marijuana program is set to launch next year.
