Nye County Schools Prepare For Budget Cuts

The Nye County school board is bracing for budget cuts connected to the coronavirus outbreak and state shutdown.

The district’s tentative budget for the 2020-2021 school year is based on current income and staffing levels, but a lot is expected to change before the board meets next month to revise and finalize it.

Nye County School District Superintendent Dale Norton said the COVID-19 pandemic is taking a bite out of state funding.

“The state superintendent has asked us that we plan for the following restrictions: A 6 percent cut, a 10 percent cut and a 14 percent cut. We have not received any guidance on the budgeting process to date,” Norton said.

Norton said budgeting has lots of moving parts in any year, but this is “not a normal year” and the board needs to have a “really good grasp” of what’s coming.

The state is expected to advise education officials about funding changes in early May.
