Two-alarm fire ravages strip mall near UNLV

A strip mall catches fire in Las Vegas
Clark County Fire Department

A two-alarm blaze that broke out at a shopping center near UNLV on July 25 was put out by the Clark County Fire Department within a couple hours.

Firefighters responded to the University Gardens Shopping Center at Maryland Parkway and Del Mar Street after the fire was first reported shortly after 8 a.m. The structure fire destroyed at least eight businesses, including the University Las Vegas Post Office.

“The post office, as with other businesses in the center occupancy, are completely destroyed and we’ve been making proper notifications,” said Clark County Fire Department Senior Deputy Chief Thomas Touchstone. He added that the fire quickly developed and rapidly expanded in the central location.

Since the post office is a federal building, a federal investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.

This is the third fire to occur near UNLV within the past two months. On June 4, a fire broke out at University United Methodist Church, located just across the street, where a man was arrested for arson. On May 13, a residential fire near University Center Drive and Hacienda Avenue affected four homes.

Although these fires have occurred near UNLV, none have taken place on campus itself.
