Our local film industry has been in the headlines a lot due to an attempt to fund a new movie studio in Las Vegas. That legislative bill died during the 2025 session, but there are still plenty of other developments keeping our film and TV industry busy and relevant.

Most recently:

  • The Nevada Women’s Film Festival took place at UNLV. It included the debut of a film, Riot in Bloom, that was largely made by UNLV faculty and students — including director/writer/professor Brett Levner. Team Riot will continue to pursue the film festival circuit as it looks for distribution — and hopefully another local showing for its film soon. Read Josh Bell's feature on the film here.
  • The Beverly Theater, the independent movie house in Downtown Las Vegas, is getting into the film distribution business with its own Ink Films. It has joined forces with two notable folks in the film industry: Former CineVegas programmer Mike Plante, serving as the head of distribution, and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt, who has curated a shorts program for Ink Films to be screened at U.S. theaters.
  • Two local horror filmmakers now have their most recent titles on streaming: Heidi Moore's Kill Dolly Kill and Brendan Devane's The Sound.
  • Surely the Nevada Film Office played a big hand in the filming of F1: The Movie, which features multiple scenes shot in town. The Brad Pitt-starring title comes out June 27.
  • Due out September 12 is The Long Walk, which was adapted from the Stephen King novella by local filmmaker JT Mollner, who found success commercially and critically last year with his Strange Darling.
