Nevada Fire Marshal: Smart Meters Not Causing Fires

Nevada Fire Marshal Peter Mulvihill says after reviewing 11 fires at homes with NV Energy's smart meters that the meters did not start the fires. He concluded in a report issued this week that the meters pose no "statewide fire problem" but recommends that local fire chiefs monitor the situation in their areas.

Mulvihill told the Reno Gazette-Journal he was largely satisfied by NV Energy's response to the fires, all  in the Reno-Sparks area. He noted that city investigators could not conclusively state that meters started any of the blazes.  Most caused very little damage, although a woman died because of a fire in July.
